Deborah Hawkins, penned Debra Renée Byrd, began writing after a blank book project in elementary school and never stopped, fashioning stories based on her favorite TV shows and movies before creating more original works. She studied at the University of the Arts and Florida State University before settling down and graduating from Temple University. She now resides in her hometown of Dover, DE, where she spends most of her time at work or at church. She loves fantasies, superheroes, is a trekkie and a brown coat. She loves television and lives for Final Fantasy video games, having collected most of them. She has read a myriad of authors, and her favorite authors change whenever she finds a new book that changes her life... "When you can't run, you crawl. Friday Freeday: Writing!

This has been a good week in writing for me.

I had been trying to break the slump I fell into during the Fall, and with Spring came some newness. I don't know if it's psychosomatic, but it's like my gears are turning again. Last week, I decided to send a short story out to a contest. I hadn't done that in so long, and it felt good to get back in the writing trenches.

This week, I started TWO WIPs that had been in the back of my mind for some time.

The first was a story I started years ago and gave up on because I had no idea where the story was going. I have a better grasp this time, and I hope it pans out the way I want it. This is actually the third time I'm starting this one again. The first was as a Backstreet Boys fanfiction (don't judge). It circles around this divorced couple and their son (in the first two tries, they had twins, but there's no need for twins). The couple is still very much in love, but an affair in the past permanently damaged their relationship. There are twists, turns, and the like that I plan to work on this time around and see this to the end.

The other project came to me while playing my favorite hopeless computer game, Rogue on Hexatron.com. I believe this was the first dungeon RPG, and if not, one of the first. I play for hours, often getting killed by hobgoblins, centaurs, or emu, or dying of hypothermia when an ice monster freezes me. I want to one day beat one of the Major Honors, who have millions of gold. Not sure it will happen, but anyway, I digress. I thought it would be cool to see players thrown into this textilated (I made it up) world, figure out what happens when they do die or fall into a darn trapdoor in the floor. The audience may only be nerds like me who love dungeon games, but we'll see how far this one goes, too.

I also had the chance to do some consultation on a book of poems two weeks ago, and this week, my one client (I think I only have two at the moment) sent me some editing work to do. She was supposed to send me the other half yesterday, so I hope she's okay.

Hope the second time through on the one story meets with success.
Dungeon one sounds interesting.

Thanks, I hope so too! lol

As for the dungeon, I'm probably going to also make sure it hasn't been done or if it has, steer myself in a way that hasn't. :)
