Finally back with a new book to share with you all!
So our resident Ninja, Alex J. Cavanaugh, writes as well as gladiates...no that's not right...Ninjiates? Sure, why not.
I read Cassafire a little while back, the second book in his Cassa series (because I'm a rebel), and had tweeted often in my excitement about his newer book, Dragon of the Stars, which had a website attached to help us try to figure out what the Kargrandes are. I'm reading it fairly slowly, having burned through my Goodreads book challenge and working on revising and being a CP, but I still need to know what exactly the Kargrandes are, and I've come to realize I think I thouroughly enjoy military science fiction, if not, then Alex's books.
So, let me share with you some of this book using Random.org. There are 240 pages in the Kindle edition, and Random has chosen for me page..................................114, which is almost halfway through the book.
He hesitated, but no one else held the proper qualifications. "You have the bridge until I return. Make sure everyone knows their duties."
Her eyes grew wide, but she nodded. "Yes, sir."
Aden sprung to his feet, determined to locate his missing lieutenant.
I can't imagine what's happened between where I am and this point, and I can't wait to get there, either!
What's everyone reading this week?

Relax, I'm On A New Book.
I'm pretty sure I bought this book a year ago now, and I'm finally about to read it. Natalie Whipple, the awesome author of the awesome Transparent books (still waiting for a third, but you know), is also the author of this one, and I can't wait to crack it open.
But first, let's see what's in store for me in this'n. There are 205 pages in the Kindle Edition, and Random.org has chosen page 167. Because, you know, it hates me. Let's see if I even remember how to get to the proper location on my Kindle.
"Do you have any tips on how to break the news to Mom?"
He laughed. My father, the ex-Akuma, laughed. Then he shook his head. "A sleeping tigress will be angry no matter how you wake her."
I sighed. Awesome advice.
Teehee.
Reading anything new? What do you think? Have you read any of Natalie's work? I love her.

Accidental Wednesday Words: Foreign
I forgot to post yesterday. At least I actually had work to do.
Yesterday, I started reading Foreign, a self-published space opera by Alitha Martinez, who I met at our local Comic-Con this past..August? I think it was August. Time is flying. Anyway, Alitha started out as a comic illustrator, and she does BEAUTIFUL art. I bought three post-card prints of her characters, and I can't wait to have the space to stand them up. You can read a sample chapter of the above here, and enjoy the tatted man candy line-up behind it. hehe
But now, let me choose a line or two from a random page in the book. There are 133 pages with words on them, so using Random.org, we will look at page.....76.
(Pause: Page 73 has one of the prints I bought, a character I haven't met yet named Ricki. Her face is the backdrop of Alitha's homepage, Welcome to Ariotstorm. She's gorgeous! Unpause.)
Glass hulls offered a glimpse into an ideal society where there was no crime or fear; all of the citizens valued their hard-won independence too much to defile it. Every make, model, creed, code, and species lived side by side completely unconcerned with their differences.
Sounds like a utopia.
What are you currently reading? Care to share a line?

Pitch Wars and Random Words from the Jack Taylor Cases
There I was, giving up on watching the one Pitch Wars interview I finally got to watch because my cousin was over, and I happened to be in my email inbox when a Brenda Drake e-mail came through basically saying, "SURPRISE! THE PITCH WARS WINDOW IS OPEN NOW! GO GO GO!"
So, I submitted, and now I wait and stalk and wonder if the mentors I picked were talking about me at any point over the weekend. So nervous! I---ack! Can't talk about it anymore.
Years ago, I read my best friend from high school's debut novel Holiday Hotel (Jack Taylor Cases #1), and after not paying attention to the sequel's release, I saw on Facebook he was coming back to town for a book signing, so I finally bought the second book, Cloud City. I'm 2 years behind; the third book comes out this year, but anyway, if you like MG/YA Mystery and holiday spirits brought to life, you'll love these books.
Using Random.org, I will share with you a line from the book. Not sure if this is a good idea when it comes to a mystery; the chances are I'll give something away for myself, but hey, that's what I do.
There are 317 pages with words on them, and Random has chosen page 188, so let me look through...Yep, giving something away possibly. Sigh.
A little over a minute later he heard another whisper in his right ear wave in and out as if breaking through barriers to get to him.
...Toymaker said they were unrecognizable, behind masks...
Creepy!

Pitch Wars and Random Words from Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere
(Futurama - Bender "I'm Back, Baby.")
(Smooth McGroove: Final Fantasy VII Victory Fanfare A Capella)
I hope everyone is having a good summer and had a great June and July. I enjoyed my break, but I was itching to get back to blogging (hence my random blog in the middle of my break). And [in my Bill Nighy Viktor voice:] we have much to discuss...Selene and I.
Pitch Wars is around the corner! I believe I participated last year, because it was a label in my list of labels. The blog-hop of all of the participating mentors went up yesterday over at Brenda Drake's blog. You can research all of them and ask questions on Twitter via the hashtag #askmentor (I just learned you can link Twitter searches). I hope to get picked so I can see if a mentor is thinking what I'm thinking about changing my opening. I'm almost sure I need to, but I want to make sure.
On that note, I think I do because the agents I've queried aren't wowed by my opening. In my first drafts, I began in the thick of the action and received critiques asking, "But who are these people?" So, I added an opening scene showing who the people were, but I guess the calm before the storm is failing at the moment. If I make it, I definitely know what scene will be the new opening.
So that's what I'm doing with my writing. Now...
What am I reading? First off, I reached my goal of 20 books read this year! Many of them were graphic novels, but if I keep going, I might reach 30!
That being said, I'm trudging my way through Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. I don't know why. It might not just interest me the way I thought it would, and it was a spur of the moment pick-up in the library. All of the books I bought at random waiting on my Kindle have a right to be mad.
Anyway, I'll still be using Random.org to show you all a line of my current read. There are 337 pages in Neverwhere, and Random has chosen page 126. I won't be randomly picking the line anymore. I'm returning myself the freedom to pick that myself. So here's a little bit from page 126.
There was a faraway screaming noise, thin and mindless, like an idiot child deprived of its toy. The smoke-tentacle let go of Richard's ankle and slid back over the edge of the platform, and it was gone.
Reading anything good right now? Are you thinking of entering Pitch Wars? Let us know if you're a mentor! See you tomorrow for IWSG!

Wednesday Words: Fire
Happy Hump Day!
It feels like a Tuesday, but thankfully, it's not one!
I have finally moved onto Fire, by Kristin Cashore, which I bought immediately after reading Graceling, the first book in the series. This world so far is surprisingly different than Katsa's on the other side of the mountains: there are MONSTERS over here! By monsters, I mean animals and people who are weird colors and can persuade you with their minds. Yeesh. I can't wait to see how this ties in with King Leck from Graceling, though I sort of see it. I also really like Fire and her best frenefit (lol) Archer, though he's a little dense sometimes.
(Side note: having posted the cover, I now see there's a face on it. I must not have stopped to look at my actual book.)
Alright, to the point. On Wednesdays, I use Random.org to share with you a piece of what I'm reading, so let's get into it. There are 461 pages in Fire. Let's see what Random chooses.
Page...................................................148. Ooh, I'm almost there.
Hey, the beginning of a chapter! There are approximately 21 lines on this page, so let's see what we'll be reading.
Line.......................................................6.
No. Cansrel's mind was strong as a bear and hard as the steel of a trap, and every time she left it, it slammed back into place behind her.
Fire's father was a very scary man, and I'm pretty sure I know how he "killed himself."

Wednesday Words: Defiance
Happy Hump Day!
Wednesdays are the days I usually set aside to share with everyone what I'm reading by using Random.org to help me out. This week, I'm reading one of my "competition" books based on one of the lit agency's requirements to list books mine would compete against.

Defiance, by C.J. Redwine.
It's interesting so far, a weird juxtaposition of medieval values and modern nomenclature. Rachel Adams and her Protector, Logan McEntire, are somehow going to escape the tyrannical police-state in which they live to find her father Jared, who never came back from a courier mission. Mayhem and secrets ensue. Hopefully I can check it out again when the Kindle version disappears back to my digital library. I was reading something else when it became available, so I haven't gotten too far, and it's due in 2 days. (Hey, I successfully placed it on hold again, so that should solve that.)
Anyway, there are 416 pages in the Kindle edition. Random.org has chosen page...............344.
Geez. That's 82.7% of the way in, so I have a feeling I'm about to spoil it for myself. But that's the nature of this game!
There are approximately 19 lines on this page, so Random has chosen line....................18.
The Cursed One roars and coils itself to strike again.
I knew they would eventually stumble upon this thing, so I can't wait to see what it looks like.

Wednesday Words: Cassafire
Happy Wednesday!
I feel like I haven't done a Wednesday Words in weeks! These are the days where I use Random.org to share with my followers what it is I am reading.
Last week I started Cassafire by the Captain and Sensei of many of us bloggers: Alex J. Cavanaugh.
"But wait," you should probably say, "I've been following your Wednesday Words for a while. When did you read Cassastar?"
Well, what had happened was...lol. There was a promotion happening where the Kindle edition of Cassafire was on sale for like $0.99, so I bought it to try it out. I don't read much Science Fiction, so if I didn't like it, at least it wasn't hard on my wallet.
And on that note, I actually like it! I really like Byron. Part of him reminds me of Gibbs on NCIS, but I can't wait to read Cassastar now. I wonder how different he was as a probie pilot.
Now, there are 240 pages in the Kindle Edition, so using Random.org, let's see what page we'll be visiting...........................page 73.
That is 30% in at location 1230 based on my Kindle.
There are approximately 16 lines on page 73, so Random has chosen...................................line 7.
A surge of power flowed through his mind. The valley vanished, replaced by a view of the city.
Psychic teleportation! (<---Since when is that not a word?) I was intrigued when I first read Byron doing something of a psychic nature, and I'm guessing more about the Cassans and their abilities is explained in the first book, so I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Wednesday Words: Cactus Heart Press vol. 11
Happy Earth Day, Admin. Professionals Day, and WEDNESDAY!
As an administrative assistant, I am now stuffed with breakfast and presents (I didn't eat the presents), but that won't stop me from sharing with you all what I am reading this week!
This week, I'm finally reading the Speculative Issue of Cactus Heart Press, the edition in which you can find my short story "Origin"! I can't stress enough how much I love the tone of this press, and I'm so glad I was given the opportunity to become a part of it.
But enough about me! Using Random.org, I will choose one of the 155 pages in this edition. Random has chosen..........................page 148.
LOL. That's the cover page for the Bios. Let's try again....................page 86.
That's better. The short story is "The Lies Trees Tell," and Kate mentioned this one in the introduction, so I'd been waiting to read it. A young woman ran into a tree, and the tree seemed to swallow her!
There are about 19 lines on this page, and Random has chosen.......................1. So here's the whole paragraph. lol
Alex had started to cry. She hadn't meant to, but the conversation had turned from one of Aunt Bev's charmingly silly Old World folktales to scary. And her dad was dead, and she didn't want to deal with this.
This was right after her grandmother told her that trees lie, and her father didn't escape them. It's a very interesting and eerie story.

Wednesday Words: Cactus Heart Press vol. 10
I'm still reading during this A-to-Z Challenge! lol
Welcome back to Wednesday Words! This is where I use Random.org to show you all a piece of what I'm reading.
I have a few compilations I need to finish, one of which I discovered when Kate Sheeran Swed invited me to submit for it: Cactus Heart Press!
I immediately purchased Volume 10 so I could see if this press was a good fit for me, and I was not disappointed! It's probably one of the best places for my type of writing.
So, now that I'm finished all of my library books, I'm taking a break and reading these compilations.
There are 138 pages in this volume, and Random has chosen........................122.
The short story is called "Whatever You Can Spare," and there are approximately 21 lines on this particular page. Random has chosen....................line 16.
That's why people work, after all. If Tyson could break his bad luck, we'd be eating better than Hamburger Helper every night.
Ah, Hamburger Helper. Memories.

Wednesday Words: Graceling
Happy Hump Day!
How is everyone doing with the A to Z Challenge! My colors are doing better than I thought they would. :-D
Most Wednesdays, I stop by to share with you a piece of what I'm reading using Random.org. At the moment, I'm in the process of beginning to query again, and one of the agencies tells you to prepare a proposal just in case. In that proposal, you need to list your competition. I've never even THOUGHT of competition! So I Googled YA Fantasy novels and stumbled upon a few that I would most likely be up against.
So I put a couple on hold at my library and am now currently reading Kristin Cashore's Graceling. (Hey, and today's letter happens to be G for A to Z!)
Reading anything interesting?

People in this story have what they call a grace, which is a power of some sort. Some fight really well, some read minds, etc. Katsa, the main character, can kill. Yikes. These gracelings are marked by having two different colored eyes (something I actually use in my story, but not in the same way, but it's still so weird!). Katsa has started a protective council, and they've found themselves in a bit of a mystery. I can't wait to see whodunnit. ;)
Now, for the sharing. Random.org has helped me look through the 472 pages and has given me page..............391.
There are 20 lines on this page, so Random has chosen line.......................11.
She didn't want everyone talking about it and pointing it out and treating her this way. She loosened the neck of her coat and tucked the ring inside.
Ahhh, what are they talking about?! I have a ways to go, so I can't wait to see what's going on.
Reading anything interesting?

Wednesday Words: A Victorian Flower Dictionary
Happy Wednesday!
Most Wednesday, I share with you what I am currently reading. While I'm still reading Octavia Butler's Seed to Harvest, that will be a while, but I have also started reading the companion to a book I read a few years ago, Language of Flowers.
A Victorian Flower Dictionary by Mandy Kirkby has everything you need to know about the most popular flowers. Each flower has a meaning: like an iris means "message." There's one flower that has like 5 meanings based on the color, but I can't remember which one. One color means "I love you," but a striped one means "I never want to see you again." lol
So, as I use Random.org to help me choose a page, let's see what it gives me out of the 192 pages in this dictionary.........................page 126.
That is the chapter about (Wicked Witch voice) the Poppy, which means "fantastic extravagance." There is a poem on page 126, so here it is for you: "Poppies" by the 19th century poet Frida Wolfe.
The poppies in the garden, they all wear frocks of silk,
Some are purple, some are pink, and others white as milk,
Light, light for dancing in, for dancing when the breeze
Play a little two-step for the blossoms and the bees.
Fine, fine, for dancing in, frilly at the hem,
Oh, when I watch the poppies dance I long to dance like them!
The poppies in the garden have let their silk frocks fall
All about the border paths, but where are they at all?
Here a frill and there a flounce – a rag of silky red,
But not a poppy-girl is left – I think they went to bed.
Gone to bed and gone to sleep; and weary they must be,
For each has left her box of dreams upon the stem for me.

Wednesday Words: Seed to Harvest
Good morning!
Welcome to Wednesday Words, where I share with you all a piece of what I am reading this week using Random.org. I've also decided to start adding the actual cover on this day. I think it helps with visuals. :)
Yesterday, I (sort of) began Octavia Butler's Wild Seed, the first novel in the collection Seed to Harvest. I'm only a couple of pages in, but it looks to be about two immortals. Immortals are always intriguing. :)
There are 253 pages in Wild Seed, so using Random to pick a page, it has chosen...............page 111.
There are about 29 lines on that page, so Random, do you stuff..................line 4. It's an answer to a question, so I'll add that, too.
"I will obey," she muttered, then faced him defiantly. "When will I have my own house? My own cooking fire?"
"When you've learned what to do with them."
Ouch.
What are you reading this week?

There are about 29 lines on that page, so Random, do you stuff..................line 4. It's an answer to a question, so I'll add that, too.
"I will obey," she muttered, then faced him defiantly. "When will I have my own house? My own cooking fire?"
"When you've learned what to do with them."
Ouch.

Wednesday Words: Flight Vol. 7
Happy Hump Day.
So about this Daylight Savings debacle...
Anyway, welcome back to Wednesday Words, where I typically use Random.org to help me pick a page and line from that page to share with you all what I'm currently reading. Every now and then, I switch it up, and today is one of those days.
I love graphic novels, and the series Flight is currently one of my favorites. It gathers multiple writers and artists together to create beautiful and whimsical pieces of fiction. I'm halfway through Volume 7 (Hopefully I'll get to read Volume 6, but my library didn't have it!), and instead of using Random today, I thought I'd share the opening of the next story I'm about to read, because it's funny.
S: I've decided to become a SKEPTIC!
O: WHAT?! I don't believe it!
Teehee.

Wednesday Words: A Handful of Dust
Good morning!
Welcome back to Wednesday Words, where I use Random.org to share with you a piece of what I am currently reading!
Sometime today I will be starting Mindy McGinnis's A Handful of Dust, the sequel to Not A Drop to Drink, which was a very exciting thriller of a book, so I can't wait to dive into the next part (though I'm at work, so I have to).
There are 374 pages in my Kindle edition somehow (this must be because I have an old Kindle. It said there were 10 less pages in the last book I read), so Random has chosen..................page 142.
Oh great, I don't have to calculate that as a location! Thanks, Mindy! lol
There are approximately 20 lines on page 142, so Random has chosen........................line 3.
The steady clip-clop of their hooves hypnotized Lucy in the heat of the afternoons, causing her thoughts to stray.
I personally love that sound.

Wednesday Words: Bloodchild and Other Stories
Good morning!
I got snowed in yesterday (FINALLY!) and as it was Fat Tuesday, I'm kinda not alive yet sitting at my desk at work. But that doesn't mean you all miss out!
Welcome back to Wednesday Words, where I share with you all a piece of what I'm reading using Random.org to pick a page and some lines for me to read. Last week, most of the books I'd put on hold in the library (like 4 of 8, I think) came in, so I have begun Octavia Butler's Bloodchild and Other Stories, 2nd ed.
And even though Goodreads says there are 224 pages in this edition, there are actually 214. I wonder how they messed that up.
So, there are 214 pages in Bloodchild and other Stories, and Random has chosen...................page 12, a page from the title story, "Bloodchild"!
There are about 28 lines on this particular page, and Random has chosen......................line 9.
Now the pipe could be turned so that one half slid around the the other and a rifle could be stored inside. This wasn't our only gun, but it was our most easily accessible one.
"Bloodchild" was a pretty weird story that Octavia Butler wrote to overcome her fear of those flies in South American that lay eggs in your wounds. I liked the second story, "The Evening and The Morning and The Night," better.

Wednesday Words: The Awakened Kingdom
Happy Hump Day. :)
Welcome back to Wednesday Words, where I use Random.org to show you all a piece the book I am currently reading.
At the end of last year, N.K. Jemisin published The Awakened Kingdom, an e-sequel to the awesome Inheritance Trilogy that became my life a few months back. This book follows a brand new godling named Shill who gets herself tangled up with mortals while trying to find out what her nature is. She's a very interesting godling, being less than 6 months old, only 1 month when the story starts. She has a thought process of someone with no attention span, which is always a hoot to read. :)
I'm about 3/5 of the way through, so let's see where Random.org takes us today.
From 1-100%, Random has chosen for me to go back to the 36% mark. (I just learned how to get to a location in an e-book! Multiply the number of locations by the percentage where you want to go.)
Counting these lines aren't as easy as I thought. I'm going to veto Random and myself and give you a few lines from the 36% mark.
His eyes narrowed. "You'd do my bidding? In exchange for...what, exactly?"
Oh, this! I inhaled. "Let me follow you around and do stuff like you do and talk to you and watch how you do things and maybe be your friend!"
The innocence of children. :)

Wednesday Words: The Beautiful Ashes
Good morning, and welcome back to Wednesday Words, where I use Random.org to help me show you a little bit of what I'm currently reading!
I received Jeaniene Frost's The Beautiful Ashes with two other books I bought. I don't know if it was on purpose or accident, and I probably should've checked, but I didn't. It sounds like an interesting read, so let's see what I'm in for.
There are 304 pages in the paperback edition, so Random.org has given me.............................page 202.
This has never happened before. lol That's the end of the chapter, and there are actually only 2 lines on this page. Here's a hanger for you!
"Let's get the bondage lizard party started, then," I finally said, opening my eyes.
Like it or not, this was my life, so I had to make the best of it.
Hey, what are YOU currently reading right now?

Wednesday Words: The Kingdom of Gods
Good Humpday to y'all!
Every 2nd-5th Wednesday, if I am reading a book at a good enough pace, I use Random.org to share with you a few lines of what I'm reading. I began reading the third book in N.K. Jemisin's Inheritance Trilogy, The Kingdom of Gods after reading The Broken Kingdoms in about 3 days. Even though I'm a few years late, what a great debut for Ms. Jemisin! I'm a big fan now.
The Kingdom of Gods is a much bigger project than the other two, coming in at 613 words, and we're looking through the eyes of the Trickster Sieh in this one, so whether or not he's reliable is on a very thin balancing beam.
Alrighty, so in the way of pages, Random.org has chosen..........................page 454.
There are 28 lines on that page, so from 1-28, Random has given me...................line 6.
I'm going to jump up to 4 so you all have a little bit of context.
The continent that had been destroyed by the Arameri when they'd been foolish enough to try and use Nahadoth as their weapon. He'd done what they wanted, and then some.
There's always a valuable lesson in being careful what you wish for.

Wednesday Words: BUSINESS!? MANKIND WAS MY BUSINESS!
Happy Christmas Eve!
Instead of showing you all another line from The Marvelous Land of Oz, I thought I'd share my favorite part of one of my favorite plays/books/movies: Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. I've already started watching The Muppets' version on Netflix, and I hope to watch at least one more version this weekend. Here's the one I remember best:
Have a very Merry Christmas!
