Deborah Hawkins, penned Debra Renée Byrd, began writing after a blank book project in elementary school and never stopped, fashioning stories based on her favorite TV shows and movies before creating more original works. She studied at the University of the Arts and Florida State University before settling down and graduating from Temple University. She now resides in her hometown of Dover, DE, where she spends most of her time at work or at church. She loves fantasies, superheroes, is a trekkie and a brown coat. She loves television and lives for Final Fantasy video games, having collected most of them. She has read a myriad of authors, and her favorite authors change whenever she finds a new book that changes her life... "When you can't run, you crawl. Friday Freeday: Poetry Time

(Pretty personal when you get right down to it, but inspiration is inspiration.)

I Want...

You know what I want?
I want to feel love
Not "feel loved" or "make love"
I want to feel LOVE.

There has to be more
Than the ache of empty
The echo of hollow shell
The dark endless hallway

I want that look in the eye
That touch of the hand
The heart, the beat, the song
To end all songs

I want that rhythm
The one that never,
(No matter how hard you want it to)
That never, ever stops

That pulse that syncs
That embrace that doesn't weaken
Where is that hand that
Reaches only for me?

Are you there, God?
It's me, Deborah.
The tree is still standing,
But its branches are crying

I can't always breathe
On my own, by myself
Waiting, waiting, waiting
For whoever has my CO2

Wanting that ache to subside
To be with that perfect fit
To know my better half won't just
"Complete me" but make me twice as great

I don't want to be selfish
But I want to be spoiled
And lavished and understood
In a language only known to one other

I want to be carried away
Without getting carried away
Grounded into the sky and fall
Hopelessly, helplessly, but rationally

I want that love to manifest
So I can reach out, so
It can be felt by my hand, so
The aching can be beaten, defeated, overcome

"To want" means "to lack,"
And frankly, I'm tired of lacking
The most basic of human desires
And that might make me basic

But I want to feel love
My mind is overdosing on wasted
And my heart is drunk on lonely
I want love

(I'm pretty sure this isn't finished, but that's where I stopped.)

Una Poema

I just wrote this.

____________________________________________

Diós supo que estaba haciendo
Cuando colocó el océano
Entre nosotros

Porque mi naturaleza salvaje
Brotó cuando me hablaste

Las posibilidades!
Que eres tú que busco
Cuando estás tan lejos de mí

Sus palabras se ponen
Los toques contra mi piel

Y no puedo pensar claramente
Racionalmente
Casi no puedo pensar

Quiero sentir, quiero besar
Sus labios contra los de mí

Quiero hacer más
Sin inhibición, sin avergüenza
Sin arrepentimiento

No sé que hace
Solo te conozco

Como la canción:
Estamos la luz que cae
De los ojos

Cae por mí

Saturday 'Stalgia

Yes, I countrified nostalgia to make my title alliterate. lol

I was in my poems folder on my thumb drive and forgot about the gems I wrote for Poetry a Day. If you're ever bored, you can go ahead and scroll through my April Dailies. If not, that's cool, too, but here are the first and second day poems I wrote in 2012.

"Communication"

Hello? Are you there?

Nah, of course you're not.
You don't even know I exist.
And I have no clue where you are.

So when are we meeting?
Will it be that fateful Summer day
Where I finally decide to leave this house?
Be a beach crab, not a hermit?

Did you like that?
I bet you're laughing right now
And aren't sure why.
Tell those people to stop staring at you.

You're beautiful.
Whoever you are.
I'm cute, so I think you'll notice me.
Was that conceited?

But I bet you like that.

"Visitor"

I'm just passing through
No need to look at me
I'd actually
Appreciate it
If you didn't even talk to me

I'm trying to hide behind this tree
It's a little taller than I expected
How the hell'm I supposed to
No, I can't climb it
I came up short

Some dude at the top
Right hand side
Is smiling down at me, though
He waved
I feel better

Well, it's okay if he sees me

IWSG: O ! say can you see

Hello! And happy early 4th of July from the Insecure Writer's Support Group, led by the awesome Alex J. Cavanaugh!

I really don't have much to say today, but I thought I'd provide some inspiration based on a letter to the editor in my newspaper a couple of weeks ago. The man started by complaining about the way some people embellish "The Star Spangled Banner", then went on to tell the history of it, which I didn't know, so I ignored his little complaint. lol

Francis Scott Key had gone to negotiate the release of war prisoners (War of 1812) and in ended being held himself, due to becoming aware of the British intent to attack Baltimore. So, he was in prison during the bombardment at Fort Henry September 13-14th. From his cell, he was able to see the American Flag still standing in the morning.

Inspired, he wrote "Defence of Fort McHenry", which was later titled "The Star Spangled Banner" and put to the tune of "To Anacreon in Heaven". It became so popular that by 1931, Congress made it the United States' national anthem!

And something I just learned: there are 3 other stanzas! So, here is one of the surviving copies of "Defence of Fort McHenry" for your enjoyment. Have a Happy Independence Day! May we all one day write something that is remembered for generations to come. :)

Waxing Poetic Wednesday

To Whoever You Are:

I've always felt withdrawn
Not so much shy as
closed off
A lot of people say I'm mean
But it's only because they never listen
But you do
I don't always make sense
And when I'm upset
I stutter
My mind closes against the words
But you feel what I need you to hear
And all of those times when no one else
cares to hear what I had to say
You already know and just
Wait for whatever
And I love you
Whoever you are
I will always love you

Waxing Poetic Wednesday

These will be sparse because I only write poems when they come to me. AND this came to me yesterday on my lunch break when I saw this guy at the lake that made me wonder if I knew him way back when.

Bearded Stranger

Hello, bearded stranger
I don't come here often
But when I used to,
It was with someone
Who looked like you
That is, if he happened to grow
A beard
I imagined you might be him
And won't apologize for staring
Eyes as light
And fishing by the lake
He tried to teach me once
Did you try to teach me once?
Nah, you probably aren't him
But what would have happened
If I had called out
His name?

Express Yourself: Childhood Books

Always a big thanks to Jackie Felger and Dani Bertrand for giving me something to do here. lol Click the links above to see their favorite childhood books and the list of other bloghop participants.

This week for Express Yourself, they would like to know what books we enjoyed as kids. And now, I recite a poem from my favorite childhood book:

Something big has been here
What it was, I do not know,
for I did not see it coming,
and I did not see it go,
but I hope I never meet it,
if I do, I'm in a fix,
for it left behind its footprints.
They are size nine-fifty-six.

That is the title poem from Jack Prelutsky's Something Big Has Been Here. I also still remember "Happy Birthday, Mother Dearest" and even recited "I Should Have Stayed in Bed Today" in class for Show and Tell, and the teacher had my classmates try to remember some of the things that happened to me in the poem. I will probably buy this book for my baby cousin and my future children. Poetry is love, and it's such a fun way to get kids to read.

Other favorites of mine when I was a child (in body. I'm still one at heart lol) included Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar, The Magic School Bus by Joanna Cole, and Corduroy by Don Freeman.

Thank you for stopping by!

Blogger Spotlight: Kristen Lamb

You all get at least a two-fer this week, as I'll have to visit my "AA" this Wednesday (ISWG). lol

I'm really bad with my writer social media, and the past few weeks, I've just been terrible, so because I'm going on a cruise next week, I vowed to be on the ball this week. The first blog-linked tweet I clicked on today caught my eye, because it was titled "How Eminem Makes Me A Better Writer." I found it humorous, so I went to read the entry, and I got a whole different entry than what I expected!

Kristen Lamb expresses her love of good music no matter the genre, and she goes into detail how the medium of poetry has transformed into today's rap music scene. She also does an awesome job of tying in songs by Eminem and the stakes of characters in select novels.

So click that link down there, and also check out her book We Are Not Alone. If you're a writer, there is also a contest tied to her entry, so extra-check it out. ;)

Lua (a poem)

So I don't really have anything to blog about, so I thought I'd share a poem I wrote in college about a very deep, seemingly one-sided crush I had on this guy. It's based around the song he was singing at the time the poem takes place: Lua by Bright Eyes.

I'm tired of being cold
Why don't you set down your guitar
And tell me to come sit in your lap?
Sing some more Lua for me
Let the sound of your voice
Against those words
Roam around in me
Being alone with you
Like we were then
Felt too close to the real
I bet you'd feel my heart
Lose a little weight
If you kissed me right now
We can stay conscious if you want to
But I'd rather just
Look at you in the moonlight
And know I can count on you

I don't know why I feel the need to, but I'm moving my PAD entries into another page or blog. Clear some space. lol

This wasn't really a necessary entry, but...well it's my blog. XP

The Full Chain of Haiku

So, I posted an excerpt of my haiku I wrote in college in my Poetry tab, but I forgot I had a full chain. lol For your viewing pleasure, here is the full list. I don't know how good they are; I haven't looked at them and will look after I post them. lol (Note: The grey haiku are from the excerpt.)

Chain of Haiku from a Rambling Cancer

Excuse me while my
head explodes and
blows my brains to space

Beware of Cancers
They are
Obsessed with Capricorns

Hey Kerouac!
No one goes out
To find themselves anymore

If you actually

spoke to me I would
instantly orgasm

This is ground control
Your tin can has rusted
Just come on home

Everyone
makes a blue print
You fit mine

I wake up
to a pretty song
And it's you

I would do every
thing to and for you
Maybe that's the problem

If he could he
would push away
his shadow

Here lies your

hopes and there go
my clothes

His smile and
laughter
la petit morte

He's James Dean
sulking in his
over-sized shades

Mr. Brando he is
panting in your
white wife beater

His lips in the dark
Open your eyes
He's not really there

If he keeps on
fucking himself his
babies will be stupid

Let's be friends
Three words
One bullet

Friendship
is all he can offer
Screw The General

These nails would
make you scream
for days

Anchor me to
insanity while he
slips away

Her heart went Black

Hole when she
couldn't have him

Watch from the
window as the Tenth
House falls

Cradle me
I feel
Your heartbeat

Fourth House rules:
Obsession, Denial
And then we die.

To Jenny:
That thorn in your brain
Has a name

We resort to
lesser beings because
you refuse to love

Silent screams you
cannot hear because
you're far away

Watch the petals
fall from the tree
of the Fourth House

I would call to say
I need you but shouldn't
know your number

You broke the
fourth wall, where
are your burns?

At the top of my lungs
I scream in your face
Say something!

So the truth is
you have no balls
You're not worth it

Avoid the Capricorns
at all cost
Sparks of crazy ignited

I couldn't make
anymore mistakes
if I tried

Watch out for
Cancers, they are
self-destructive

For just one day
why can't I be
a Libra?

I can't shake you
from my head
Sangria

Pick up the glass
and my fingers
start to bleed

And while our minds
settle for fantasy, hormones
kill for something more

We will get there, Jenny
Scratch up their backs
and everything

Lovers pine for each
other. LOVERS.
You're just a stalker

Aren't you smooth
Sneak inside and stay
Tuaca

With my Cancerian
powers I make you
think of me

Actions speak for
themselves. You're
not speaking to me

This is no movie
No happy ending
You'll die alone.
